The House of Nina Ricci was founded by Maria Ricci in Paris in 1932, later helped by her son Robert. Maria was 49 years old at the time, and after working at Raffin for so many years was itching to design her own creations. Madame Ricci designed gowns while Robert managed the business and finances. She worked with the fabrics directly on the mannequin to ensure they had the right shape once they were finished. Nina Ricci designs soon became known for their refined, romantic, always feminine feeling that Maria imparted to all of her collections.

The House of Nina Ricci grew rapidly throughout the thirties and their one-room maison de couture became 11 floors in 3 buildings, operations developed by WWII to include leather goods and fashion accessories.

In 1948 The house of Nina Ricci launched 'L'Air Du Temps'. The "bottle with the doves" was co-designed by Marc Lalique and Robert Ricci. The Lalique family manufactured bottles exclusively for the House of Ricci until the 1950s.

By the early 1950s Nina Ricci was nearing 70 years of age and slowly withdrew from an active role in design, choosing to just keep an eye on the house. Her son chose the new head designer in 1954, the Belgian Jules-Francois Crahay.  Nina Ricci died on 30 November 1970.

Vintage Clothing in Palm Springs: Fabulous Furs

Palm Springs Vintage Clothing: Tuesday Weld in Dyed Ermine
Palm Springs Vintage Clothing: Kim Novak in Fur
Palm Springs Vintage Clothing: Jackie Kennedy in Leopard
Nothing was more glamourous than a star in a fur coat.  The more exotic, the more of a femme fatale the celebrity was.  We have such a variety of vintage fur coats right now- especially important in Palm Springs, since the overnight temperatures are dipping into the 60s.....BRRRRRRR!

Some of my favorite images of celebrities are those of women in these fine furs.  Jackie Kennedy in Leopard, Tuesday Weld in a dyed ermine, Kim Novak in sable. Two of my favorite coats on racks right now are a vintage 1970's rabbit fur jacket with a hood and a wool 3/4 length coat with leopard trim.  If you feel badly about wearing vintage fur- keep in mind that even if the animal had lived out its natural life, it still would have died 40 or 50 years ago!

Stop in at Deja Vu Vintage Finery in Palm Springs to be fully outfitted in vintage clothing from head to toe this season!

Very few things are as sizzling hot as the vintage jumpsuit is right now.  They're so hot, they don't stay on the hangers too long at our vintage clothing boutique in Palm Springs.  If you're wearing a vintage jumpsuit right now, count yourself among the fabulous:  these fantastic versatile clothing pieces were worn by Brigitte Bardot, Mary Tyler Moore, Elizabeth Taylor, Faye Dunaway, Candace Bergen- and even Elvis Presley- the cutting edge of fashion!  Once again, celebrities are attracted to this cut- Gwen Stefani and Anne Hathaway are spotted in a jumpsuit frequently- as is Jennifer Lopez.  We currently have some uber-fabulous vintage jumpsuits hanging on the rack- my favorite being an early 70's vintage jumpsuit in white with red, white, and silver beadwork in the torso and even beaded tassels on the belt!

Louis Feraud: Vintage Clothing Design at Deja Vu Vintage in Palm Springs

One Vintage clothing designer that keeps appearing at Déjà vu Vintage Finery is Louis Feraud.  He’s a real favorite of our shoppers- even Rachel Zoe has purchased a vintage silk Louis Feraud shirtdress from us.  His pieces have a fine quality and wonderful colors and draping.  A brief bio of Louis Feraud:
In 1950, Louis Féraud created his first "Maison de Couture" in Cannes, and by 1955 had established a couture house in Paris on the Rue du Faubourg Saint Honoré (near Goyard and my favorite store in Paris, Colette).  From the mid 1950s he was dressing the Parisian elite and designed the wardrobe of Brigitte Bardot for many of her movies.
The early 1960s saw Louis Féraud hire the young unknown designers Jean-Louis Scherrer (another wonderful designer who appears often at Déjà vu Vintage Finery), Margit Brandt and Per Spook.
In 1970 he signed a contract with Fink (Germany) for a ladies' ready-to-wear collection. The year 1978 was an excellent one for Féraud: he won the Golden Thimble Award for his Spring/Summer 1978 Haute Couture Collection. He went on to claim this accolade again in 1984.
Adding to his growing collection of honours Louis Féraud was elected Prince de l'Art de Vivre in 1991. In 1995 he was decorated Officier of the Legion of Honor by the French President. His daughter Kiki signed her first Haute Couture collection in with Féraud in 1996. The head Haute Couture designer throughout the 70s,80s, 90s remained the Icelandic designer Helga Bjornsson, known for her theatrical and innovative style. In September 1999 the Dutch group Secon acquired Féraud. He died that December, aged 79 after a long and severe battle with Alzeihmers.
We love Louis Feraud pieces at Déjà vu Vintage Finery- he was a very popular designer among the jetset residents of Palm Springs- we generally have 10-20 pieces of his in the store at any given time.

Vintage Clothing Designer: Mr. Blackwell, Unsung Hero of Glamour

Of the many vintage clothing designers, one stands out in the quality, cut, and style of their pieces- The name "Mr. Blackwell" came in the late-1950s when he launched his clothing line. As with Valentino, Versace and later Richard Tyler, he and his line became synonymous. He was an important designer and during the 1960s he became the first in history to present his line on a television broadcast; and the first to make his line available for plus-size women.  His designer dresses sold for between $800 to $1,000 and were very successful.  During the nearly two decade existence of the "House of Blackwell”, he was designer to Yvonne DeCarlo, Jayne Mansfield, Dorothy Lamour, Jane Russell and California first lady Nancy Reagan.  At the height of his prominence, he openly declared his disdain for Women's Wear Daily and its publisher, John Fairchild.  During the 1980s, the emerging drift toward casual wear brought an end to The House of Blackwell.  At Deja Vu Vintage Finery in Palm Springs, we currently have several significant vintage pieces from Mr. Blackwell.

Lanvin Vintage Clothing at Deja Vu in Palm Springs

Lanvin, a longtime favorite of mine for both women's vintage pieces, as well as men's (I own two or three great Lanvin jackets, one is a fabulous ultrasuede), has been coming into Deja Vu with a pretty high frequency, and exiting just as fast- shoppers love how the vintage Lanvin can be paired with contemporary pieces.  my current favorite is this striped piece!

Janie Bryant on Vintage Clothing

January Jones in Mad Men
Designer Janie Bryant with Emmy

Emmy-nominated Designer, Janie Bryant, who has designed a "Mad Men" collection for Banana Republic has authored a book, "The Fashion File," which details developing one's own style.

One of the highlights of the book has tips on styling with vintage clothing- Ms. Bryant recommends investing in one high-quality vintage clothing piece, and building a look around it.  The piece could be a fine piece of vintage jewelry; a vintage accessory, such as a Pucci Scarf or a Lanvin Purse; or a vintage Yves Saint Lauren Blazer.  Any of these items could be used throughout an entire season, or if you live in a resort community such as ours in Palm Springs, could be worn all year long.  Ms. Bryant furthers her comments, warning that a head-to-toe vintage look can be costume-y, and may be off-putting for the office or a cocktail party.  Obviously, she's never been to a poolside party in Palm Springs redolent with vintage clothing, and guests dressed to the nines!  Don't forget, if you're looking for  vintage pieces to add to your collection, make Deja Vu Vintage your stop in Palm Springs for a whole lot of fabulous!

Christie's announced the auctioning of the estate of Elizabeth Taylor Dec 13-16 in New York.  Prior to the sale of her personal belongings, they will be exhibited in a seven-city tour, and we're very excited to see it while it is in Los Angeles. Besides her extraordinary collection of jewelry, her fabulous wardrobe will also be on display- two of her wedding dresses, one being a caftan are particularly- and her sense of humor is evident in the stacks of Louis Vuitton luggage with tags marked "MINE."  We can't wait to see this fine star's lifelong collection of vintage haute couture!
