Vintage Designers: Alfred Shaheen

Alfred Shaheen is one of the best known of the Hawaiian garment and textile designers of the 20th Century. The designer was active from 1948 into the 1980's. His most recognizable and collectable pieces are from the 1950's.

In 1948 he opened Alfred Shaheen to make Hawaiian shirts for men and dresses for women.

 He set up Surf ‘n Sand Hand Prints to print the colorful Hawaiian fabrics. His hand printed textiles were based on the flora and fauna of the Hawaiian Islands, along with Hawaiian traditions and authentic tapa cloth designs.

 

Shaheen produced not only the fabric, but they also manufactured clothing made from it. Shaheen was known for their sexy sarong dresses and swim suits, Hawaiian shirts and halter dresses with full skirts (similar to dress in photo.) The company closed in 1988 when Alfred Shaheen retired.

Fashion's Night Out 2012

 

This year, Fashion's Night Out turns 4! The exciting and uprising global event will take place next Thursday celebrating the trade of retailers, fashion and to help restore and boost the economy all while having fun shopping at your favorite retailers.

The official hours of FNO will be taken place from 6pm to 11pm only on September 6th 2012. Here in the United States, FNO is a collaboration of American Vogue, the Council of Fashion Designers of America, NYC & Company and the city of New York. FNO is global initiative to all celebrate Fashion's Night Out.

 Shop and join editors, fashionistas, designers and stylists from all over as they all flood stores all throughout the country and the world for fashion's most celebrated date of the year. Last year FNO was celebrated in eighteen different countires with over 4,500 events in the United States all associated with FNO!

 

 Want to be a part of the FNO community? Shop and celebrate the trade at your local Saks Fifth Avenue at The Gardens in El Paseo in Palm Desert, CA.

The event takes place Thursday September 6th, 2012 where you can find fall beauty tips, an eyelash bar, D.J., Champagne and Candy Bar from 6:00 pm. to 8:00 pm. I am looking forward to this event as we all should get together and talk fashion over some shopping and champagne.

Fashion News: Yves Saint Laurent to Become Saint Laurent Paris

The new creative director of only three months, Hedi Slimane, decided to take a turn on the company and has plans in the near future to rebrand the historic french fashion house name from Yves Saint Laurent to Saint Laurent Paris. For Slimane this move is to recapture youth, freedom and modernity, just as the founder of the fashion house, Yves Saint Laurent did when he created Saint Laurent Rive Gauche in 1966.
Resources report the name is expected to be introuduced in a few months and should be in place by the Spring 2013 collection. The classic YSL logo will not be going anywhere as the company will use the logo despite the name change.

Vintage Fashion: The Mini Skirt 1960's

The Miniskirt expressed powerful political and cultural attitudes of the 1960's.

Before the 1960s, young women had been expected to dress in the style of their mothers, which was usually loosely based on Parisian couture. Commercial fashion advertising often depicted mothers and daughters dressed in the same outfits. Wearing identical dresses. There weren't any clothes for young people to express their individuality at all.

By the 1960s, protests and demands for individual awareness of themselves and wanted to make a statement in many areas. Fashion in general evolved tremendously during this time. As the younger generation gained a voice, they created a space for a new and distinctive fashion that embodied their own political views- not their parents.

The 1960s saw a dramatic increase in women attending universities and entering the workforce, especially with the advent of the "temp agency" which allowed greater flexibility in when and where a woman wanted to work.

British designer Mary Quant is credited with introducing the first miniskirt at her boutique "Bazaar" on King's Road in London. She was poised to spearhead a fashion revolution. With a finger on the pulse of everyday fashion of the street, she represented a distinctive breakaway in fashion. She began to sell clothes that reflected the ideas of the day's youth.

When she raised the hemline of her skirts in 1956 to several inches above the knee, the iconic miniskirt was born. Named after her favorite car, the Mini. The miniskirt was an instant success and epitomized the spirit of London in the mid 60's- free, energetic youthful, and unconventional. The miniskirt of the "Swinging 60s" lasted until the end of the decade. Throughout, fashion designers created some new and extreme variations in order to keep the excitement alive. For example, Paco Rabanne launched his plastic chain-mail miniskirt in 1966 and then the throw-away minidress. Despite this creativity, the mini eventually fell out of fashion when disillusionment about the Vietnam war became more widespread and the future looked less positive.

The Shift Dress: Vintage History

This weekend is our HUGE Memorial Weekend Sale at Deja Vu Vintage Finery. Earlier during the week when gearing up for our big sale, I was adding onto the sale rack fun and flirty vintage dresses that I knew our customers would love. Most of the dresses that were on the rack were the popular recognized "shift" dress, most popular and worn during the 1960's. I had asked my boss, why are these called shift dresses? I know what a shift dress looks like and feels like, but where exactly did the name come from? Bill, owner of Deja Vu, did some reseacrh and came accross why the "shift" is called that way.

So vintage lovers, if you did not know why the shift dress was called a shift, well now you do!

A shift dress is a short, sleeveless dress that hangs from the shoulders. It is suitable for all body types and sizes. It has been popular since the 1960s. Though it is easy to shift or move around in a "shift dress," the term signifies a shift in culture. When the dress became popular in the late 1950s, American youth culture was at its height. The dress represented the youthful, free and revolutionary attitudes of the time.

The credible shift dress entailed many features, it's short and straight with a simple line. It hangs loose on the body from the shoulders and is held together by side panels. The dress is sleeveless with a short hemline. The neckline is high, typically with a boat-neck collar. The dress has almost no detailing, beyond side panels and breast darts. The waist is de-emphasized. This allows women to move around freely without constraints.

The history of the shift dress, I read the dress can be traced back to 1920's flapper trends. Dresses of Coco Chanel had featured exposed legs and arms with simple cuts and loose in shape with minimal waist definiton.

This movement caused many women to slowly drift from the corsets and offered women both with style and ease of movement. The shift dress was not only a new look, but was also promoted independence, modernitity and redefined the females shape. The shift is a symbol of youth culture. It was all about mobility at casual ease.

Enid Collins: Vintage Women's Handbags

At Deja Vu Vintage Finery we have a wonderful collection of the Enid Collins handbags. Collins handbags are most recognized for its craftsmanship and the delightful details on each  handbag. The Collins of Texas handbag was a MUST HAVE for every American girl during the 50's through early 70's. It was a staple to many and to have as a fashion accessory. There were two types of handbags Enid Collins created; the wooden box purse and the canvas bucket.  Each bag was decorated in colorful paint, rhinestones in several themed designs. The finishes in each bag became signatures from Enid Collins. Collins used leather trimming, with compact mirrors in each design. A bit of glitz on the way to the market?
